かく【格】
1 〔格式・位〕 (a) standing; status; a rank; a class; a grade; an order.

●うしろからリーダー格の男が出てきた. A man who appeared to be their leader stepped forward.

●両派の橋渡しに成功して彼の政治家としての格が上がった. His status as a politician received a boost when he succeeded in paving the way for a rapprochement between the two factions.

・国際コンクールに入選したことであの画家の格はぐんと上がった. His capture of a prize in an international exhibition markedly increased his stature as an artist.

・格が下がる fall in rank; be degraded; be reduced to 《a lower level》; be demoted 《to a lower grade》

・格が違う belong to a different class 《from…》; be on different levels; 《口》 be in a different league 《from…》

・そのホテルはその辺のとは格が違う. That hotel is of a higher class than the rest.

・ここはあのホテルよりはちょっと格が落ちる. This hotel is slightly lower than that one in quality.

2 〔定式〕 a rule; an established norm.

●大使の声明文には格に外れた言葉遣いが多かった. The language of the ambassador's statement deviated a great deal from the norm.

・今日の葬儀の進行は王室の格に外れたものである. The manner in which today's funeral was conducted was quite unusual for the royal family.

格を守って詩作する compose a poem in accordance with convention.
